Creating a Space Commander

First thing to do when starting to play is to create a space commander to be your in-game character. Each user is allowed to create one commander per month, thus enabling them to play many individually scored characters at one time.

Depending on how much time you want so spend, you can choose to play multiple commanders simultaneously, or just stick with a single commander. Having multiple commanders does not give a significant advantage because space commanders can only interact with their neighbours.

Objective

Your goal is to increase your Victory Point score by conquering as many high-value planets as possible. Additionally, you can boost your score by getting Awards that are granted for best-performing Space Commanders in various categories.

When you think you have reached the highest VP score you can, it's time to retire so that your score will be recorded in the monthly hall of fame. As every Space Commander has a limited life span, hanging in there till the bitter end is usually a surefire way to lower your score.

Heirs of you Space Commander will also keep your score increasing (hopefully!) after retirement, as you will get a 50% of their score added to your own.

Starting Setup

Each space commander starts the game with a homeworld, a fresh planet with plentiful resources. New planets can be conquered by launching attacks and acquired via inheritance. A starting Space Commander is guaranteed 5 days of immunity, but it's not always smart to use it.

Your starting building, the Domination Complex, allows you to produce resources and units and even acts as a telescope. Additionally, you start up with a bunch of Research Points, space ships and ground units. If there's an easy target nearby, you don't need to build anything to get started on your conquest.

The resources on your planet are always different, so pay attention to which resources are plentful and which ones are scarce on your planet.

First Steps

What actions you want to take in the beginning of game depend on the character of nearby planets and your overall play style. Here is a checklist for good starting game, however:

  • You get plenty of Research Points to start with. Upgrade your Tech Levels wisely, or invest in one or two Special Techs.
  • Compare the hidden resources on your planet to the unit type costs to choose the optimal unit types.
  • Build a Telescope to increase your vision range. It is the key to finding new worlds to conquer and other Space Commanders to interact with.
  • Send spies to neighbouring planets, especially the weakly guarded ones that do not have a Planetary Defense System (PDS).
  • Karma rules allow you to snatch planets from EPIC space commanders, and they can't really fight back before your power grows. The older an epic commander is, the easier target she probably is.
  • If you see any neutral planets, capture them as quickly as you can.

Units & Attacks

Units are divided to space ships and ground units, the former fighting in space and the latter on the surface of the planets. You will usually need both, but enemy's orbital units must be won before ground units can engage in combat. Units can be sent to conquer, loot or even destroy other planets or their buildings.

Build a Lab to increase your Research Points yield, so that you can increase your firepower-affecting Tech Levels and purchase Special Techs.
